Stairs, often perceived as a mundane feature of multi-level homes, present a significant risk of injury. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury each, second only to motor vehicle accidents. The danger isn't the same in both directions, a survey in 2007 recorded that roughly 80% of accidents happened while the person was on their way down the stairs. And that 30% of all accidents happen on the first first step and very last one. It's interesting that other hazards like asbestos and lead paint have been banned from the home, but I suppose our desire to get the most out of our space leads us to accept this as collateral damage.
