Supering Bee Hives just in time. Wintering modifications for Flow Hives. Nectar is Flowing.
in this video, I take you on a fast-paced round of honey bee hive supering.
Several hives are nearly full and need more space or they may be inspired to swarm.
Catching honey supers at less than 90% is key if you want your bees to continue to work up into additional boxes.
I also place some Ross-Round frames, one Ross Round Super and two hives are getting centered deep Ross Round frames.
The Flow Hive has been modified for wintering without having to use other hive manufacturer's equipment.
I purchased extra Flow Brood Boxes and cut them down to make medium supers that match original Flow Hive equipment.
From a single deep brood box you get a medium super and a feeder shim that can accommodate a rapid round feeder.
All while keeping the original flow-hive look.
Insulation in the gabled roof is glued to the interior surfaces, and is composed of double-bubble faced insulation.
With all of my hives, the bottom two boxes are exclusively for the bees to winter in. They are never harvested.
From the 3rd box up, honey can be removed and harvested.
This video does not show inspections, the purpose is to simply and quickly check the status of stored honey and super every hive that is circa 80% full or more.
If you expand in time, they will continue building while resources remain available in the environment.

"A field of switchgrass may look like a field of hay to the average person, but Dan Arnett sees that same field as an opportunity to help both farmers and homeowners.
Arnett is the manager of Ernst Biomass in Union Township, a firm that is working to convert switchgrass, a tall, perennial grass that’s native to the majority of the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains, into a renewable fuel source. Ernst Biomass, an offshoot of parent firm Ernst Conservation Seeds, is developing a pellet mill to grind and form switchgrass into fuel pellets.
Switchgrass has been used for game cover, reclamation, and as a buffer zone along streams to keep chemicals and sediments out of waterways. It can be grown easily and improves the soil on a farm’s marginal ground, said Arnett. Switchgrass only takes three years to mature fully, and once established, can produce for 15 to 20 years."
