The Nanavati Love Triangle: The Case that Helped Abolish the Indian Jury System

In 1959, there was an Indian case in which the civilian jury verdict outraged the judge so much that he overturned their decision.
What led to all of this? Like the Karen Read trial, the public, egged on by the media, felt sympathy for the defendant and, ignoring the evidence, decided 8-1 to acquit him. He was retried with a two-judge bench trial and found guilty. Then, there is a bit of a surprise ending to this whole debacle.
What actually was the evidence in the Nanavati case? Was this a crime of passion when Navy Commander Kevas Manekshaw Nanavati shot his British wife Sylvia's lover Prem Ahuja? Was it self-defense or an accident? Or was it a premeditated homicide? Was there any justification for the all-male jury to find him Nanavati not guilty? What societal issues played a hand in the outcome of the trial? How did the media slant affect the jury?
This is a fascinating case and an interesting look at how emotions, culture and politics an affect a jury. Is three more to deciding a verdict than just objectively looking at the evidence? I will look at this case and others that had influences outside of the actual evidence: Karen Read, Casey Anthony, and OJ Simpson.
There is a great free YouTube series called "The Verdict: State Vs Nanavati." However, it is 70% Hindi and 30% English with no English subtitles, so unless you speak Hindi, probably not going to be easy to watch. There are also three famous Indian films made about the trial: "Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar (1963)," "Achanak (1973)," and "Rustom (2016)." Unfortunately, I couldn't find any copies of these films online that had English subtitles. But, no worries, I will acquaint you well with the love triangle, the crime, and everything that followed!
