Passkey: What is it? Smartphone glossary – explained in just 1 minute.
Passkey is a new, more secure authentication method – an alternative to traditional passwords. Passkeys are based on public key cryptography.
How does it work? There is a key pair.
A public key and a private key, with the private key being stored only on the user's device.
When creating a passkey, this key pair is generated: the public key, which is shared with the service, and the private key, which is stored only on the user's device.
During authentication, the user logs in using their private key, and the service provider then uses the stored public key to verify the validity of the login.
What can the private key of a passkey be?
Biometric features, such as facial recognition or fingerprints, are usually used. But it can also be a pattern or a code.
Advantages:
Easy to use, especially with facial recognition or fingerprint
No need to remember a password
Faster login
No password theft or phishing, as the private key never leaves the device
Disadvantages:
If you lose the device, restoring it requires some effort.
