Local media reports claim that security for Harry and Meghan's four-day unofficial visit to Colombia cost eight billion pesos (£1.5 million). The £375,000 daily cost included the deployment of 3,000 police officers and soldiers, helicopters, sniffer dogs, bomb disposal units, and a constant bodyguard equipped with a ballistic briefcase or bulletproof shield to protect against potential sniper threats. The couple was invited to the South American country, where certain regions are considered dangerous by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, by the left-wing Vice President Francia Marquez, who has survived at least two assassination attempts. Nevertheless, their choice to visit Colombia and Nigeria—both considered high-risk destinations—just three months ago has sparked considerable attention.
