Automated welding with robotic cell: This is how it works
Thanks to cobots – lightweight robots that are ideal for beginners – automated welding is now a viable and worthwhile option, even for SMEs. Cobots can be trained and thus used as welding cobots – all they need is the right tool and a professional welder to teach them what to do. Automated welding by a cobot can provide valuable support for series production. For example, using a cobot means that consistently high quality can be maintained, even when producing large volumes of components. To open up this potential to as many companies as possible, automation specialist INperfektion GmbH worked in partnership with cobot dealer Niederrhein Automation GmbH to develop the INNA robot cell. Besides automated welding, INNA can be used for a wide range of tasks such as grinding, milling or gluing – provided that the integrated Doosan cobot is equipped with the relevant end effector.

To create the basis for this versatility, INNA was initially optimised for automated welding. As Sven Gerards, Managing Director of Niederrhein Automation, explains: “Welding is one of the most demanding disciplines, so it was the ideal starting point as far as we were concerned. After all, if the cobot can weld safely inside the cell, then it can carry out grinding, deburring and similar tasks in there safely, too.” The companies chose to use Line XMS from item as the basis for INNA. Wissam Nehme from INperfektion explains: “The item products are perfect for the integration of robotics, because they are suitable for universal use and offer free scalability in terms of both quantities and dimensions. What’s more, it’s easy to expand or modify existing constructions.”
