Cats Don’t Need Us, But They Like Us
SUMMARY:
Studies show that cats do not need their humans to feel safe, they don’t depend on us, they look after themselves.
If they are scared a cat won’t come to its owner, it will jump on top of the wardrobe or hide under the bed.
However, in a way, that’s a real compliment: cats stay with us because they want to. Cats won’t live in an unhappy home, they’ll just walk out. And abandoned or feral cats get on just fine on their own.
Cats are not pack animals, they don’t depend on other cats. So they are not going to depend on their owners. But it doesn’t meant that they don’t want to be around their owners.
To cats, we might be humans, or just bigger cats.
Many researches show that dogs perceive us as being different than themselves: As soon as they see a human, they change their behavior. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from [the way it plays] with a dog.
We've yet to discover anything about cat behavior that suggests they have a separate box they put us in when they're socializing with us. They obviously know we're bigger than them, but they don't seem to have adapted their social behavior much. Putting their tails up in the air, rubbing around our legs, and sitting beside us and grooming us are exactly what cats do to each other.
This suggests that cats might not know we are not just bigger cats, and that we like them. Cats don’t need other cats and don’t need humans, so when they stay with us, they stay by choice. Isn’t that love?
So if your cat stays with you, it means that he/she wakes up everyday and chooses you all over again. If dogs are known to be loyal and perfect, though at times too clingy, cats must be the cool lovers.
Cats don’t need us to stay alive, to protect them, to feed them, cats need us because it’s pleasant. We’re not owners, we’re companions, and entertainment.
In a nutshell, that’s so fun.
