The Sumatra chicken is distinctive, beautiful, with long curves, abundant feathers, and a rich green sheen.
Originally from the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo in Indonesia, the breed developed in the jungle and was shaped by its environment.
It was brought to the United States and some European countries in 1847 as a fighting breed, fighting chickens, for entertainment purposes.
It is a very old breed, considered primitive by some experts.
It was first admitted to the American Poultry Association's standard of perfection in 1883.
Sumatra chickens tend to breed seasonally; roosters compete for territory and reproductive rights during certain months of the year, and live together harmoniously outside of the breeding season.
Historically, islanders captured the males at the beginning of the breeding season, when the birds were most aggressive, and used them in fights. The birds were then released when the season ended.

The seasonal aspect is still part of the breed today; fertility and litters can be expected to arrive in late spring.
