This was my first time in the OR (operating room) observing a total knee replacement surgery. I was able to experience walking to the patient prior to the replacement surgery, observe the full replacement surgery, and treat with physical therapy - all on the same day!!

This "continuum of care" was a real treat because I was able to see everything from start to finish. What usually happens is that I treat the patients for a home recovery a couple hours after their replacement surgery. Meaning, they have their surgery, then I meet them to assess their safety and their ability to walk, transfer, and use the bathroom. Once everything checks out, they are sent home.

I feel extremely fortunate to be able to experience such amazing work. Throughout the total knee replacement surgery, the surgeon was educating me along the way. He was saying things like "look, this is what a degenerated joint looks like and this is what a torn/worn down meniscus looks like." WOWWOWOWOWOW!! SO COOL RIGHT?!

It really is incredible how our technology advanced and we humans have thought of invasive surgeries to replace a joint and more. Low key, it kind of inspired me to think about getting into surgery school.... NAHH! Ill stick with my DPT.
