Researching Chinese painting - Michael Cavayero
I am talking with Michael Cavayero, Assistant Professor and Research Fellow at Peking University. We discuss his research on Chinese painting, Sinology, Buddhism, and the combination of these. His approach is somewhat different from the usual one, in that he works not so much on the paintings themselves (which are rare for his period) but on textual sources discussing those. By combining art history with philology, he is able to uncover aspects of the Chinese painting tradition not immediately apparent when viewed from a more mainstream approach to the topic. He also explains his motivation behind his interest and talks about the scholars who inspired him early on in his career.
