Russian first underwater nuclear test
Recently declassified photos have revealed the first milliseconds of the USSR's first underwater nuclear test.
This historic event took place on September 21, 1955, in the Black Bay at the Novaya Zemlya test site.
During the test, a nuclear charge known as RDS-9 was detonated while mounted on a torpedo, targeting a minesweeper positioned at the epicenter.
The 3.5-kiloton explosion obliterated the ship, turning it into red-hot fragments.
The newly released images capture the dramatic sequence immediately following the explosion. At just 10 milliseconds in, a brilliant flash appears, followed by the formation of a fireball at 25 milliseconds.
This fireball expands, creating a shock wave that disturbs the water's surface. By 250 milliseconds, a recognizable mushroom cloud begins to rise.
These photos were taken from a plane flying directly above the explosion at an altitude of five kilometers, allowing for a clear view of the shock wave's perfect circular shape.
According to Alexander Zhuravlev, a veteran of the Central Test Site, the crew faced significant risks. As background radiation levels surged, one pilot recalled feeling the shock wave push against them like a hand from behind as they left the drop site.
