England's Oldest County
Kent as an area has retained its name possibly longer than any other in the UK. This video explores how the name has endured through time.
Certain counties in the UK were created in 1974 including Avon, Cleveland and Humberside but they didn't last more than 22 years and have since been incorporated into other counties.
Clarifications (sorry):
The first map shows Anglo Saxon kingdoms - Kent is not the county there but the name surviving from the kingdom is what is was getting at.
When I say 'England broke down into states' I meant 'England. as it would become known' I assumed people would infer it like I did in my mind.

I also butchered the pronunciation of Scir as well - in old English it was 'shir' so apologies there.
And just because it's retained its name the longest time doesn't make it the oldest 'county' in-itself but it is coincidently the oldest.
