Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve
We visited the reserve last week for this month’s spotlight video.
It was a beautiful sunny autumn afternoon, and we started the walk at the far end of the reserve and made our way back down to the car by the layby.
Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve has a single track foot path leading to the two bird hides, and runs from one end of the reserve to the other. You are able to make this a circular walk by turning left at the Forestry Commission sign (at the start of the video) and following this straight path to the gated entrance at the end but turning right before the gate. There you will see the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust’s Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve sign, just follow the path from there.
This nature reserve may be relatively young, but it is already bursting with life. Just a few miles from Ibstock and Coalville, this is the ideal place to escape the area’s industrial heritage.
The site was farmed, probably for hay, with some pasture, up until the late nineteenth century, when the sewerage system for Coalville was installed and parts of the River Sence were straightened.
The site ceased to function in 1989, but was still used up until 1993, then plans started to take place to transform this area into a wildlife heaven.
In 1995 work began on the wetland areas recreating the natural meanders in the river, marking the start of this amazing transformative journey.
Planned Works
Over the Winter we have a number of improvement works planned at Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve, all funded from our Wild About Our Reserves Appeal run earlier in the year. These planned works will take some time to complete and mature, and we hope to film a follow up video showcasing the fantastic impact your donations have made next Summer.
