Intel Lays Off 15k, Google Blocks AI and Amazon is in trouble - This Week In Tech 08 03 2024

MIT Creates a new transistor that could change the world! in 10-20 years. This new chip uses ferroelectic material instead of silicon. This type of material that I have no idea if I am pronouncing right because i have never heard of it, doesnt wear down like silicon, for whatever reason. While typically SSD's only last about 5-10 years of constant use, they have a limited lifespace and write cycle. This new MIT chip, apparently can undergo 100 billion switches without degrading 'very much'. As apposed to a standard SSD which is rated for a lifetime write cycle of 100k to 1 m write cycles.
Google is updating its search engine to combat deepfake AI generated content. Currently they are only concerned with explicit content, but their steps include blocking those images, and then removing the webpage, or website, from the search results all together. I couldnt find which of the two, either page or site, would be removed from results, but I am sure that I speak for everyone when I say that the less AI crap we have online the better.
Speaking of removing AI, the US Senit has introduced the 'NO FAKE Act'. This act, from what I understand of it, allows individuals involved with Deep Fake content mad of them without their knowledge or consent, to sue the creator, the distributor or the obtainer of that video, image, audio, or basically anything that takes their likeness in any way. The bill sounds great, but is left opened as, from the way I read it, the bill is not only limited to AI, instead it can be used for copied content, parodies, or lots of other things that could fall under Fair Use, like less than a 10 second clip of a TV Show for presentations or products.
Amazon is being held responsible for third party sellers after several electronics being sold on Amazon were hazards. Because the items were sold via amazon, Amazon is being held responsible for products sold on their site to have proper shipping and recalls. Which, I think is amazing because Amazon use to be wonderful. Never had to worry about buying something on there, you knew it would be exactly what you wanted, new, and reliable.

Our last bit of tech news for the week, Intel lays off 15,000 people in an attempt to save the company. Yep, apparently, chip giant Intel is not doing so hot, and has been underperforming for a while. Their goal is to cut corners, removing 15% of their employees, and incorporate more AI into their product. To be honest, I am down with slimming up a company, but I personally think that if 15% of the company is worthless and not needed, then nothing is going to change. You will still have the same people as before, doing the same job. That is assuming that 15000 people did nothing. I see this as the first step in Intel being bought out by someone else. But, that is just my hot take.
