Stuart VE9CF's POTA Activation at Oastler Lake Provincial Park

Stuart VE9CF recently embarked on an exciting portable ham radio activation at Oastler Lake Provincial Park, known as CA-0323 in the Parks on the Air (POTA) program and VEFF-0323 in the World Wide Flora & Fauna (WWFF) program. This beautiful park is situated just outside Parry Sound, Ontario, a town famous for being the birthplace of hockey legend Bobby Orr.

The Parry Sound region, known for its picturesque landscapes and abundant natural beauty, provided an ideal backdrop for Stuart's ham radio adventure. Oastler Lake Provincial Park, with its scenic riverside campsites, offered the perfect setting for this activation.

During his short but productive outing, Stuart managed to log an impressive 112 QSOs (contacts). This high number of contacts in a limited time frame speaks to Stuart's operating skills and the popularity of the POTA program among ham radio enthusiasts.

The activation allowed Stuart to enjoy the natural beauty of Oastler Lake Provincial Park and share this unique location with fellow ham radio operators around the world. Through each contact, he helped promote awareness of this lovely camping destination in Northeastern Ontario.

Parry Sound, the nearest town to Oastler Lake Provincial Park, is renowned as the birthplace of Bobby Orr, one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Born on March 20, 1948, Orr revolutionized the game with his exceptional skills as a defenseman. He became the first defenseman to lead the NHL in scoring and won numerous awards throughout his career, including eight consecutive Norris Trophies for best defenseman. Orr's connection to Parry Sound adds a layer of historical significance to the region, making Stuart's radio activation from nearby Oastler Lake even more intriguing for sports enthusiasts and radio operators.

Stuart's successful activation at Oastler Lake Provincial Park demonstrates the blend of outdoor enjoyment and amateur radio operation that POTA and WWFF programs aim to encourage. It's a testament to how ham radio can enhance the experience of exploring natural parks and conservation areas while fostering a global community of like-minded enthusiasts.

As more ham radio operators like Stuart continue to activate parks and protected areas, they enjoy personal radio achievements and contribute to the broader appreciation and awareness of these natural treasures, all while operating in the shadow of Canadian sports history.
