Utilities are a classic lower-risk investment. Utilities are essential, and hopefully, most people will not have to forgo them during a recession. Household goods and other necessities are also considered recession-friendly investments.

Johnson & Johnson The iconic healthcare company makes well-known
products such as Band-Aids and Tylenol, along with medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
Gold. Then there’s the most common safe-haven asset of all, gold. Gold tends to outperform stocks in times of economic turmoil, data shows. For example, during the Great Recession, the value of gold increased dramatically, surging 101.1% from 2008 to 2010, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “As a safe haven asset, a small allocation to gold could have a meaningful impact on overall portfolio volatility and performance for long-term investors who seek stability in negative market environments and exogenous shocks to the capital markets.
A fraction of my portfolio should be allocated to dividend-paying stocks. Receiving a consistent flow of cash or stock payments can provide investors stability during an economic downturn. I have about 80% of my 401K allocated to dividend-paying stocks.
U.S. Treasury bills, bonds or notes are among the safest investments since these assets are backed by the full faith of the U.S. government – meaning it is guaranteed that you will get the full return on your investment as long as the investment is held until its maturity date. These assets are popular and likely to rise during times of economic uncertainty.
"Buying the dip". If you're in the kind of financially stable position that allows you to buy in a downturn, you could be setting yourself up for success down the line by doing so. Since timing the market perfectly is next to impossible, don't worry about trying to find the exact moment when stocks are at their lowest. Pick a few investments you've always wanted to own and give yourself a price threshold you feel comfortable with.
