Culture Complex for Revitalizing the Backward Regions of Jongno, Seoul

The purpose of this project, ‘DURUMARU’ is to suggest the possibility of the architecture that could revitalize the depressed region of a city. It is a large-scale culture complex facility project that planned offices and hotels by responding to urban context and designed cultural space by dealing with the historical context of Pima road in Jongno.
In the project site, there are traces of the common people called ‘Pima road’. It is a place where ordinary people were hiding themselves from the horse, when the king was going on a large south road so long ago. Accordingly, there are much cultural assets of ordinary people and it needs to be reinterpreted in a modern way.
Users of this site, that has historic alleys and urban boulevard, are inevitably diverse. Complex needs which are the culture and art of the common people and the elderly, the livelihood and craft shop of youth and residents, and offices and retails for workers, are concentrated in one area. In a position where different needs are faced, creative alternatives will lead the whole project.
