In this very first Relic Spotlight, I sit down to share one of the earliest pieces from my collection: three Iraqi dinar banknotes spanning Saddam Hussein’s rise to power.
The 1979 note was printed the same year Saddam seized control of Iraq, marking the start of a new regime built on loyalty and fear. Later notes, from 1992 and 1994, show his image dominating the currency, symbolizing absolute control.
In this short presentation, I discuss what these bills represented to the Iraqi people, their connection to Saddam’s infamous 1979 purge, and how even paper money can tell the story of a dictatorship!
This begins a new on-camera series exploring real relics tied to moments from our broadcast archives.
