How to Make a Sewing Pattern Out of Almost Anything
How to make a pattern out of a sculpture.
Step 1: Cover sculpture with plastic wrap
Step 2: Use 3 to 10 layers of packing tape to tightly cover the surface.
Step 3: Draw your cut lines. Pay attention to where seams will meet and consider that, once cut, the pattern will need to lay flat.
Step 4: Cut out your lines. Make sure the pattern can lay flat. If not, adjust accordingly.
Step 5: Transfer your pattern to paper. If your shape is symmetrical, then I always pick the side I like better to base both sides of my pattern on. I chose the left side.
Step 6: Use scrap material to test your pattern. Make necessary adjustments.
Pro tip. Label everything. Use marks and/or labels to help you remember where the pattern will come together.
Congratulations! You should now have a pattern.
