OSCE head in Kyiv, expresses security concerns
(10 Feb 2022) The head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe expressed his concerns on Thursday about the security situation in Ukraine.
Zbigniew Rau - who's also the foreign minister of Poland - said he was "seriously concerned" at the continued conflict in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine and with Russia's "growing military presence" along the Ukrainian border.
"We are seriously concerned about the security situation in and around Ukraine, both in Donbas and in regards to Russia's growing military presence along the border with Ukraine and in Belarus," Rau said during a joint news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minster, Dmytro Kuleba, in Kyiv.
Kuleba accused Russia of escalating tensions in the region.
Top officials from Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany were due to meet on Thursday in Berlin to discuss ways of implementing a 2015 peace agreement for the separatist conflict, known as the Minsk Agreements.
Meanwhile, Russia has massed over 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s border and has launched military maneuvers in the region, but says it has no plans to re-invade its neighbour.
Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a bitter conflict since 2014, when Ukraine's Kremlin-friendly president was ousted, Moscow annexed Crimea and then backed a separatist insurgency in the east of the country.
The fighting between Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces has killed over 14,000 people.
