At the end of the 19th century, after one of their comrades loses an arm under a press, workers in a Turin textile factory decide to strike for better conditions, especially a reduction of the workday from 14 to 13 hours. They are encouraged by a battered high school teacher, on the run from justice for an assault on a public official. Marcello Mastroianni, with his gloves torn, a haggard expression, and constant hunger, conveys sincere but impotent idealism to a cast of solid proletarians—Folco Lulli, Renato Salvatori, and Bernard Blier—in this beautiful evocation of the birth of the labor movement written by Monicelli with Age and Scarpelli. Extremely human, between smiles and disillusionment, pride and weakness, in a degraded, shantytown Turin, made of stark contrasts, photographed by Giuseppe Rotunno.
