Gaming on a Kindle in 2024 is bad, like you would expect. It’s an Ebook reader, with obvious limitations.
But for this video I wanted to see if you could actually game on a Kindle Paperwhite. And here is what I found out.
First, the older Kindle models actually had some games. The screen also had a function called „active content”. You could download games for the Kindle.
But you don’t have that stuff on the newer models. And I will cite a reddit comment here: Newer models don't support active content (games). Even if you had an old enough one that did support active content, Amazon shut down the store for it, so you couldn't add any new games.
Still, you can play some basic games on the paperwhite. If you click these three lines and go to the web browser. Go to Google.com and search for games like Tic Tac Toe and other basic javascript games, you can actually play some games on the Paperwhite. But the experience is underwhelming, like you would expect. The game is fairly unresponsive, has ghosting and is not that fun to play.
For chess, I found that the last link from the first page has a working chess game. Again, the unresponsiveness of the display, coupled with the fact that this is not a game designed for Kindle, made it a bad experience. A playable one, but an unpleasant one too.
You can also try Solitaire. But again, the experience is bad. Also due to the fact that the display has no colors, you can’t play many Solitaire games.
There are some point and click games you can play. Some work, others don’t. But I couldn’t find a setting to change the orientation of the web browser, so the point and click experience wasn’t that great.
And if you try some classic flash games, forget it. In the best case scenario the game won’t load. In the worst case scenario, your Kindle will freeze. Like mine did trying to load flash games on the Kindle.
Also, another big downside is that playing games on the Kindle drains its battery fast. You would think maybe that you could play some basic games and use the long battery life of the Kindle. But just know that (at least in my case), while loading and playing the web browser games on the Kindle, my battery life was draining like playing some serious Mobile games.
And also, since they are web browser games, you can play them only as long as you have an internet connection.
All in all, gaming on a Kindle is a very underwhelming experience. You can do it, but I wouldn’t advise you.
