Deep Purple ~ Acker Bilk ~ (HD)
Peter DeRose (or De Rose) (March 10, 1900 - April 23, 1953) was a US Hall of Fame composer of jazz and pop music during the Tin Pan Alley era.
"Deep Purple" was written by Peter De Rose as a piano solo in 1934. In 1935 it was arranged by Domenico Savino and introduced by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra on radio. Sheet music sales were brisk, but the song didn't achieve universal popularity until 1938 when Mitchell Parish added the lyric. It was Parish's first song to reach the top position on Your Hit Parade. The song charted several times after the lyric was added.

Acker Bilk -- or Mr. Acker Bilk, as he was billed -- has won immortality on rock oldies radio for his surprise 1962 hit "Stranger on the Shore," an evocative ballad featuring his heavily quavering low-register clarinet over a bank of strings. To the jazz world, though, he has a longer-running track record as one of the biggest stars of Britain's trad jazz boom, playing in a distinctive early New Orleans manner.
