This video shows my own experiences with evacuating the areas of the Halifax, Nova Scotia forest fires in the spring of 2023, when a sudden and fast moving forest fire put thousands of people, pets and homes at risk.
While it is not as sensational as someone driving through fire to get out of the area, my family and I had to still run the risk of being taken over by the fire if it had moved faster, and gotten into the areas we had to drive through in order to evacuate. My subdivision only has one real means of exiting the area, as all of the paths we could take lead to the Pockwock or Hammonds Plains roads, which effectively becomes a single point of exit.
Driving towards the fire was an anxious moment in my life, and that of my family, one fraught with worry, anxiety and the unknown over the state of our neighbourhood and especially our home.
We are still feeling the effects of the recovery today, though we were one of the luckier ones who’s home has remained mostly unaffected.
