IMJIN WAR Ep. 20 - Second Invasion: Japanese Advance Inland
September 1597. The Japanese launch their inland advance, kicking off Hideyoshi’s second Korean invasion with a push into Jeolla (Cholla) province. They destroy the Ming Chinese garrison at Namwon and drive the defenders at Chonju into retreat. The Japanese advance will come to within 100 km. of Seoul, where it will encounter Chinese forces under General Ma Gui at the Battle of Chiksan.
The Koreans, meanwhile, are putting up little resistance, for the Japanese have announced that they will show no mercy. Farmers who obediently remain in their fields will be spared, but everyone else is to be slaughtered in fulfillment of Hideyoshi’s order to punish the Koreans. Tens of thousands of Koreans will be killed in the weeks that followed and their noses cut off and collected and “nose receipts” issued to unit commanders. These grisly trophies will be shipped back to Japan and buried in a mound known as the Hanazuka, the Mound of Noses (later renamed the Mimizuka, the Mound of Ears). Thousands of Koreans will also be taken prisoner and sent back to Japan as forced labor or sold in the slave market at Nagasaki.
