A secondary axis, also known as a second y-axis, is inserted into an Excel chart whenever two different data sets need to be represented. The result is a combination chart that also allows for various formats (columns, areas, lines, etc.).
Examples:
1) Units sold (1st y-axis) and sales (2nd y-axis) - each per month
2) Units sold per month (1st y-axis) and total units sold up to the current month (2nd y-axis).
