When you constantly power and unpower redstone components that would "power" a lava or water block, it creates a clock output when read by an observer. However, if the water or lava receives a random tick, it will also be detected by the observer.
Today's video covers how to separate the clock outputs from the random ticks, and make a contraption with your choice of output.
