Challenging misconceptions one roll at a time. 💙♿️ Next time someone questions why I use a wheelchair when I can walk, I'll just let the little one's pushchair do the talking.
As ambulatory wheelchair users we get asked all the time why we use wheelchairs when we are able to walk but we don’t ask parents why they use a pushchair for their young toddlers.
There are a lot of reasons why people use wheelchairs when they are able to stand or walk short distances. It can reduce fatigue and give them more energy, it can keep them safe from injury if they have balance or coordination issues, it saves time as we are unable to walk as far or as fast as our friends & family. All of these reasons are also reasons that toddlers use pushchairs (buggies, strollers, whatever you want to call them) .We just don’t think about it as much as pushchairs are a mobility aid which is normalised because they are part of everyday life for a huge percentage of the population.
Wheelchairs are not a bad thing, they are an aid. They give freedom & independence, they are something to be utilised when needed, they are simply a way of getting around just like using a pushchair for a toddler. Let’s stop questioning and judging disabled people & take more time to think & understand. This also applies to older children who’s parents get questions about why they are STILL using a pushchair when they are perceived to be ‘too old’ when in actual fact they have disabilities and a pushchair is a better option than a wheelchair.
If you’re disabled, what questions do you get from strangers that you wish they’d stop asking? If you’re not disabled, do you have a question about disability that I can help answer for you in a future video? Let me know in the comments.
