For millennia, Indigenous people have used fire to keep forests healthy. But in 1850, California outlawed these tribal practices. It was forbidden for 100 years, until the National Forest Service realized this was a mistake.

Today, the wisdom of "good fire" is recognized as a key step to unraveling the deadly cycle of California wildfires.
