Single photon source
Animation of a single photon source based on parametric downconversion. A single blue photon is annihilated in a nonlinear crystal and two red photons are created. By correctly engineering the optical parameters of the interaction, the two red photons are uncorrelated in frequency and so are in pure quantum states.
