With few signal boxes less railway staff around stations and along the track problems go unobserved for longer. Thanks to an observant enthusiast the driver of 66207 was told his trains last wagon had its brakes locked on and the brake pads were smoking hot the train was safely brought to a stand before being taken through the station where the wagon could be detached DB locomotive 66099 was brought into the station to do that and because it had to enter a section of track occupied by a train was authorised to pass the protecting signal at Danger sounding the horn and proceed at caution towards the rear of the train. Detonators are placed on the rail which help the driver proceeding slowly to judge the speed of the locomotive and distance from the train, in fog or other conditions that reduce visibility they are an essential aid. It is rare to actually see this procedure carried out even though it is used quite often and with the short distance from signal to rear of the train involved here the whole thing could be observed.

It was going to be a day with not much to see apart from A4 Pacific locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley and ended up an interesting couple of hours with lots of freight an unexpected light 37 and my first look at a Stadler FLIRT unit a rather odd design having a power unit in the middle of the 4 car set
