In a universe full of super soldiers, billionaires in flying tanks and actual gods that fight against time travelers and aliens, there are heroes who protect their fellow humans from threats closer to home. Patrolling the streets of New York’s Hell’s Kitchen is the scarlet-suited horn-headed sentinel, Daredevil. Blind attorney turned vigilante Matt Murdock debuted in Daredevil #1 by Bill Everett and Stan Lee in 1964. This promiscuous American Zatoichi has been brought to life in comics and on-screen for decades.
Something between Romita and Nocenti’s creative processes clicked when they worked together on Daredevil. From their first issue, they took off running. It felt a little more intimate and realistic than the stories Miller and his collaborators put out. Nocenti, who had a background in journalism (and continued to do journalism work throughout her career) took inspiration from the real world to fuel her stories, rather than using ninja and manga influences.
