Did you know that the FAA has a rule against pilots having friendly conversation? It’s called the sterile cockpit rule, a name which makes it sound even worse. But the rule makes sense. Airline pilots are supposed to be all business below 10,000’. A sterile cockpit is one where chitchat, banter and anything that doesn’t have to do with the safe operation of the flight are prohibited.

But what about sport pilots? They aren’t even allowed to get above 10,000’. Do they get to visit or joke at all with their passengers?

Happily, they do, since the sterile cockpit rule only applies to commercial operations and the airlines. However, pilots of smaller aircraft should ask their passengers to stop chatting and allow them to focus during critical aspects of the flight like takeoffs and landings.
