Produced in the United States during the filmmakers’ formative years in Los Angeles, Mei Mei blends intimate realism with lyrical restraint to explore desire, loneliness, illusion, and emotional displacement within the fragile boundaries of love and identity.
SYNOPSIS
Lulu, a high-class prostitute living in Los Angeles, receives repeated visits from her neighbor Julian, who insists she is his missing ex-girlfriend, Mei Mei. Convinced that he is inventing stories to seduce her, Lulu rejects him time and again — until loneliness softens her resistance. As their fragile bond deepens, the line between illusion and truth begins to blur, revealing two souls trapped between love, loss, and mistaken identity.

Shot on 16mm film with the support of Kodak and CCI, Mei Mei merges Chinese emotional sensitivity with American independent cinema aesthetics, creating a visually poetic meditation on desire, solitude, and self-perception.
Conceived as an intimate psychological chamber piece, the film unfolds through restrained gestures, silences, and glances rather than overt exposition, allowing meaning to emerge gradually through the viewer’s emotional engagement.
Its observational approach avoids narrative certainty, inviting ambiguity and encouraging the audience to actively complete the story from their own perspective.
