A high-energy neutrino hit Earth on September 22, 2017, which wasn't unusual since the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica detects similar neutrinos every month. However, this one was special because it carried enough information to trace its origin. Astronomers discovered it came from a flaring blazar, a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy, that launched it towards Earth 4 billion years ago.
