Apple’s macOS began as Mac OS X in 2001, using Roman numeral “X” for “ten.” Renamed OS X in 2012, it became macOS in 2016. Versions moved from 10.0-10.15 to macOS 11-13, then macOS 26 in 2025. Nicknames shifted from big cats to California landmarks.
