The Evolution of Peter Rabbit
Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit has had many looks over the years, Amazingly, no publisher would print her story of a mischievous bunny. So she paid for the book to be printed in 1901 – it had no color illustrations.
A year later Frederick Warne published the book and it was an immediate success. The story was widely pirated in the US after Frederick Warne failed to register the copyright. Numerous illustrators offered their interpretation of Peter. He even wears a pink jacket in one edition.
Peter’s success went beyond books. Board games and dolls were created shortly after the book’s publication. Much more spin-off merchandising followed.
Beatrix Potter books continue to be published. There’s even a miniature pop-up edition of Peter Rabbit.
