A NOTE ON LANGUAGE: In 1964, Negro was the commonly accepted written form of the word. In this book, Kabat quotes from many different primary sources, including her brother Luke’s letters and diaries, those written by his friends, and contemporary news reports. Within quotes—in the language of the time, the word Negro appears often.
