Logansport Low Head Dam Removal
In fall 2021, Orbis architectural historian James Heimlich assisted in the removal of the 10th Street low head dam in Logansport, Indiana. This concrete dam spanned the Eel River and was built around 1910, as a replacement for the original dam just upstream that was constructed in 1828 by General John Tipton.
The dam first supplied water to a power a sawmill and then later a hydroelectric plant. The hydroelectric plant has been closed for many years, and as with all the low head dams in Indiana, the impoundment altered river ecosystems and negatively effected migration of fish and other aquatic species upstream along the Eel River. Now that this low head dam has been removed, the river ecosystem can begin returning to its natural state.
