What really happened between Achilles and Patroclus in The Iliad?
In this video, I break down one of the most debated relationships in Greek mythology by going back to the original text and examining Achilles’ actions, motivations, and transformation throughout the war.
To set the stage, I created a short cinematic scene imagining a confrontation between Thersites and Achilles—something that could have happened, based on the tensions and themes in the epic. Thersites, one of the few characters who openly criticizes the Greek leaders, offers a perspective that challenges the traditional heroic image of Achilles.
You might have seen the term “shipping” online—this is when people pair two characters together in a romantic way. For example, Achilles + Patroclus is often called “Patrochilles.” In this video, I take a step back from that idea and focus on what the original text actually shows.
From there, we dive into key moments from The Iliad:
• Achilles’ conflict with Agamemnon and his withdrawal from battle
• The decision that leads Patroclus to enter the war
• The role of armor, identity, and reputation
• Achilles’ reaction and transformation after Patroclus falls
