A child engages in "useful" activities either because they're afraid of being scolded or because they want praise. They can't think strategically or with a view to their future. They want to play and have fun, but they don't want to work. If the activity format isn't reconsidered, whatever the child does will be perceived as drudgery; it's not their choice, it's coercion.
