Guayaquil, Ecuador - Exploring with a Camera
I visit Guayaquil regularly now and know the city well. I always feel welcome and I love to wander the streets of downtown taking photos and saying hello to the locals.
I know Guayaquil is a dangerous city. I've seen the statistics and I understand what is happening there. I'm careful and I'm always aware of my surroundings when I'm exploring. So far I've never had any kind of negative experience, in fact, just the opposite. The locals are surprised to see me and sometimes go our of their way to make me feel welcome and chat to me. I've had more positive interactions with strangers in Guayaquil than I ever did in all the time I lived in Loja. The difference is noticeable.
Still, all that could change for me if I happen to be targeted by just one bad guy. You can be as prepared as possible but you just never know, and there is certainly risk.
You are the only one who can decide if you'll feel comfortable exploring a city with crime rates as high as Guayaquil. Choose wisely.
