Over the years I received a number of questions from people about mind mapping for children. How can they teach their kids about mind mapping?
Give your child the benefit of outlining all their school work, personal projects, and other ideas in a visual mapping.
You are not talking about some rusty adult who has a dominant left or right brain and who needs an explanation about this. You are talking to a child. Put yourself in their shoes and explain things to them.
the benefits of mind mapping for children are:
studying is and will remain fun
it makes studying easier and it will go faster
mind mapping will come naturally to them.
There are 3 problems many parents have when they teach mind mapping to their child.
1. they want their children to create perfect maps
2. they want to teach their children mind mapping, the system, not mind mapping the benefit when studying
3. they want to use mind maps only for each and every school assignment (and this is not always the best solution)
Here's the solution. I have one for young children up to age 12 and for teens.
When you first start out, let your young child simply draw the story you tell them. Use image words so they can create nice drawing. Then, when you are ready, have them tell you the story in their own words.
Don't push them, don't judge them, be a coach, guide, and be supportive
When this is working for them, you can start to move towards 'real' mind maps.
