Lead Core Knots and Leaders
Tutorial for lead core knots, leader selection and leader length for using lead core to troll crank baits for walleye. We demonstrate tying three different lead core to leader knots that are commonly used by anglers.
The Willis Knot is a preferred knot that works great especially with a fluorocarbon or mono leader. The Willis Knot can also work well with braid but can be more difficult to tie, especially in the boat.
We also demonstrate how to use the Albright Knot and the Double Uni Knot which can work particularly well for tying a braid leader to lead core.
We also discuss when and where to use fluorocarbon or monofilament leaders and when to use braid. On the Great Lakes or inland fisheries with clear water or zebra mussels, we recommend ten pound fluorocarbon leaders that are a minimum of 20 feet but often longer than 30 feet.
On inland water that is stained like LOTW for example, we often prefer 12-20 foot leaders using ten pound Fireline.
