The nature of demons has always been to torment gods and humans as soon as they become powerful.
After receiving a boon from Lord Brahma, the three sons of Tarakasura had three cities built by Mayadanav. One was made of gold, one of silver, and one of iron. These cities could roam the sky. They had grand buildings, gardens, and roads. Millions of demons lived there. The comforts and amenities in those cities were so abundant that any demon could get whatever he desired. Not only this, Tarakasura's son performed penance and asked for a boon from Lord Brahma and built a stepwell capable of bringing the dead back to life. If any demon died, he was taken to that stepwell. He would come back to life and become more powerful than before. Then the demons became fearless and started scaring the gods. They started roaming here and there, chasing away the gods from place to place. These unruly demons would destroy the gardens of the gods and even destroy the holy ashrams of the sages. Their atrocities created chaos everywhere.
In this way, when all the worlds were afflicted, all the gods joined Indra and attacked those cities. But due to the effect of Brahma Ji's boon, all the demons would come back to life.
All the gods together went to Brahma Ji. Brahma Ji told the gods that no one except Lord Shiva can get you out of this problem. Thereafter, all the gods under the leadership of Brahma Ji went to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is the one who gives protection to those who seek refuge. After seeing Lord Shiva, the husband of the bright Parvati, all the gods bowed their heads and saluted him. Lord Shiva, as a blessing, said, tell me what is your wish.
After getting the permission of Lord Shiva, the gods praised Lord Shiva and said, we are in your protection with our mind, words and actions, please bless us. Lord Shiva, pleased, said, all of you, without any fear, tell me what work can I do for you.
In this way, when Mahadev ji (Lord Shiva) gave protection to the gods, then Brahma ji folded his hands and said - Sarveshar, after being established on the position of Prajapati by your grace, I had given a boon to the demons. Due to which they broke all the limits and no one can kill them except you.
Then Lord Shiva said – Gods! I will soon kill him, riding on a chariot, holding a bow and arrow. The gods were satisfied and started praising Lord Shiva.
