Don't Trust Your Histogram Spikes!
Setting your flash power by trail and error means reviewing your exposure using the cameras histogram. But don't fall into the trap of looking for a nice spike in the centre of the histogram. The height shows the number of pixels at a certain brightness, the width shows the brightness range.
