Ionic bonds are one of the three main types of intramolecular forces, along with covalent bonds and metallic bonds. Ionic bonds are very strong due to the powerful electrostatic attraction between opposite ions (a metal cation and a non-metal anion). However, many ionic compounds dissolve easily in water.
We show two examples of ionic bond formation, using Lewis dot structure notation.
