Grub Terra Black Soldier Fly Larvae Attracts Song Birds, Chicken Feed with a Calcium Boost!
Spring is hard on some song birds that don't eat birdfeeder seeds. Black Soldier Fly Larvae is not only a great treat for my chickens, but it's a great way to boost Eastern Bluebird diets in early spring.
I was often told that meal worms would be good for Bluebirds, but I've since learned that Black Soldier Fly Larvae are a superior source of protein, calcium, fat, and more. For chickens, these are treats, but Bluebirds I think they will be much stronger as nest season arrives.
I made a mix of black soldier fly larvae from Grub Terra, and black oil sunflower seeds. I was also impressed when Dark-eyed Junco's and even Chickadees took them. We have Bluebird nest boxes and have been counting their eggs and offspring for the past 22 years. It will be interesting to see if viability is boosted by this early diet staple.

I bought my bag of Grub Terra Black Soldier Larvae on Amazon, 80 ounces. It goes a long way, particularly when mixed with black oil sunflower seeds. Chickens will gather under the feeders to pick up the seed and larvae that are spilled over the side as some birds flip through the seed with their beaks.
