Danish Whisky Stauning Smoke Review Chris Jensen Studios
Today we finish the last of this amazing smoky whisky from the country my family comes from, Denmark.
Stauning Smoke!
First off, what a super cool whisky, second, what a super flavorful whisky, and I love the fact it comes from Denmark.
This a handmade floor malted whisky, with no rye to it whatsoever, it's all malted barley and is smoked over a mix of peat from local bogs and heather from nearby Ringkøbing Fjord. The smoke in this whisky has no medicinal notes, like iodine that you find in Islay scotches like Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg (which I love), this one is more of the peat smoke you would get in a scotch like Highland Park, but with a lot of sweet heater and botanical notes to it.
When I first tried this whisky, it was great right out of the bottle, but was lacking a bit in the smoke I was expecting, that all changed when it was allowed to open up a bit after about 2-3 weeks of sitting in the bottle after the 1st try with my brother, Todd.
What a whisky! Wow!! At 47% it really needs no water, although the smoke comes alive a bit more with the addition of water, but those sweet heather botanicals take a back seat to the smoke and creaminess, so either is good with this one.
Colour: Golden Straw
Nose: Light peat smoke, a bit salty and sweet, charred campfire wood
Palate: Light smoke, sweet notes of heather and flowers, light spice, salty, brine and sea notes, but once it is allowed to open up, the smoke gets more intense and better and really brings the entire whisky together.
Finish: Medium, with smoked charred wood, bacon, dark chocolate from around a campfire and roasted almonds covered in bacon grease.
