Choosing the Right Tumbler
First things first, you’ll want to start with a 20 oz straight sublimation tumbler. These tumblers are the easiest to work with, especially if you’re just starting out 🥤. Remember, your tumbler must be sublimation-ready, meaning it’s coated specifically for sublimation ink to adhere properly 🖨️.
Preparing Your Sublimation Print
You’ll need a sublimation print created with sublimation ink on sublimation paper 📝. Before pressing, make sure to clean your tumbler thoroughly. We recommend using a lint roller or even alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove any oily fingerprints that could distort your design 💧. The cleaner the surface, the better your final result 👌.
Trimming and Wrapping the Print
When you print your design, you may notice some excess white space around the edges. Trim at least two sides of your print for clean edges that align perfectly on the tumbler ✂️. One of our favorite tricks for a flawless seam is to apply heat-resistant tape along the edge of your print 📏. Make sure the tape is close to the edge and trim any excess paper ✂️. This trick helps minimize ghosting and ensures a clean, professional finish 🧵.
Securing the Tumbler for Pressing
To avoid gaps or puckering, apply several small pieces of heat-resistant tape along the seam and around the tumbler 🔒. The tighter the wrap, the better the sublimation ink will transfer to the surface 🔥. Don’t skimp on tape—better to use more than less!
You can also tape around the top and bottom edges to prevent ink from escaping and causing a blowout 💨. The more secure the paper, the less chance of error during the sublimation process 🔒.
Pressing the Tumbler
We’re using a tumbler press set at 400°F for 60 seconds, flipping the tumbler halfway through for even coverage 🔥. If you prefer using an oven, make sure your tumbler is wrapped securely with shrink wrap before placing it in the oven 🍽️.
Final Reveal and Cooling
Once the pressing is complete, carefully peel off the paper and tape 🎉. We recommend using heat-resistant gloves or a weeding hook to help with the tape removal while the tumbler is still hot 🧤. If you’re more patient than we are, feel free to let it cool first ❄️.
Bonus Tip: Perfecting the Bottom Edge
If you’re having trouble with the bottom of your tumbler ghosting, try trimming your design so it stops just above the curved base of the tumbler 💡. This method leaves a small white edge but ensures a clean, crisp finish 🧼.
